I’m always on the lookout for opportunities for my team members to grow. Sometimes, within an organization, people hit a ceiling where their potential and ambition outpace the available opportunities. We faced a situation like this at Barrier Tech, and I started searching for a way to create a new path forward.
That’s when I came across Roof Maxx. The concept intrigued me—a cost-effective, sustainable solution for extending the life of roofs. I decided to invest in becoming a dealer, putting around $100,000 into getting everything set up. The plan was simple: establish a small Roof Maxx dealership that one of my key employees could run, allowing him to build a solid career while we grew a steady business. By September 2023, we were operational.
However, the first six months were rough. Life threw some curveballs—an injury to my key employee, the arrival of a new baby, and other challenges led to a slow start. But through those early struggles, we discovered a crucial insight: many of our Roof Maxx leads didn’t just need a treatment; they needed entirely new roofs. That realization sparked a question—why not sell full roof replacements?
Selling roofs, however, is a completely different beast than selling Roof Maxx treatments. I knew I needed help to expand the business in the right direction. Around that time, I had been introduced to Camden Hess, and we had talked in the past about helping him launch a business whenever he was ready to transition from Boeing. When another opportunity he was exploring fell through, I pitched him on joining me to build this roofing company. In June 2024, we officially launched Squatch Roofing.
Our goal for the first year was simple: refine our systems, install a lot of Roof Maxx, and complete a set number of roof replacements to ensure we had the right processes in place for a big 2025. We stayed focused, and by the end of the year, we hit our targets. In the fall, we brought on an operations manager to help solidify our foundation.
Now, 2025 is shaping up to be Squatch Roofing’s breakout year. We’ve built momentum, and it’s exciting to see the growth and potential ahead. This journey started as a small dealership to create an opportunity for one employee, but it has turned into something much bigger—a full-fledged roofing business with a strong future. The best part? We’re just getting started.
